Residency, Day 1

After unpacking my studio (which in itself was an incredibly exciting experience), I joined the other artists for a great dinner and plenty of lively conversation. The artists include 4 visual artists, a composer, a sound artist and 2 writers, and the variety of experience and outlooks are so fantastic; so great to be among other artists!!

The land here will be amazing to explore – it’s a very desolate place— it feels like the ‘wild west’ in a way that I’ve never experienced. The wildlife here includes mountain lions, bears, moose, elk, bobcats, falcons, badgers and bald eagles, to name a few. Hoping I get the chance to see some of them!

The ranch has been in operation for around 100 years; it was bought a few years ago by a couple from Chicago who are in the hotel business. They converted it into a luxury resort & dude ranch; there are over 150 horses here in addition to hundreds of cows. It’s an incredible experience to have ‘luxury’ amenities at an art residency…from heated studio floors to chef-prepared food to miles and miles of hiking trails that can be explored with cross country skis or snow shoes…..it’s truly more than I could have ever dreamed of.
